Dr. Turekian met with ERA scientific partners to exchange ideas about science, innovation, and development. He toured ITA and ISRA, focusing on the Joint Microbiology Lab. Turekian urged researchers to continue their important community-engaged scientific work, because according to him, “we are in an age where scientific knowledge is a source of power.”

Our Mission

Revitalization of agriculture in Senegal is critical to ensuring that the country can feed itself. While 75 percent of Senegal’s 13 million people are employed in the agricultural sector, the country still imports 70 percent of its rice. By taking the lead in this important project, Virginia Tech is doing its part in the fight against hunger worldwide.

"Today, we have the tools and knowledge to end extreme poverty and hunger by working together to transform agriculture. This isn’t just a development hypothesis; it’s actually happening."

Rajiv Shah
Former Administrator of the US Agency for International Development
